Type 2 Diabetes: Medical Nutrition Therapy Prevention The American Diabetes Association (ADA) conducted a 2012 study measuring the ââ¬Å"Economic Cost of Diabetes in the U.S.,â⬠the results showed a $245 billion financial à ¬-encumbrance from the use of health resources and lost productivity over a 5 year period (American Diabetes, 2013). The cost amounts ââ¬Å"accounts for more than 1 in 5 health care dollars in the U.S.,â⬠and about 62% of cost being covered by government insurance (American Diabetes, 2013). Some people may be unaware of how changing to a healthy lifestyle by eating he althy, losing weight and being more physically active can help delay or prevent type 2 diabetes, as a result it could also help reduce the financial burden of diabetes care for the individual and the economy. The cost of diabetes as a whole may not be on U.S. tax payerââ¬â¢s radar, or seen as a big picture concerns, even small or corporate business may not be aware of how the cost of productivity effect their bottom dollar. The cost of being unhealthy living with chronic disease does not just effect one personââ¬â¢s quality of life but it effect their families, caregivers, business productivity, health professionals, which has a trickledown effect on the U.S. economy. If the rate of diabetes diagnoses continue to increase it is estimated that by the year 2050 1 in 3 adults will have diabetes (Boyle, Thompson, Gregg, 2010). The office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, have a Healthy People 2020 goal to ââ¬Å"reduce the disease and economic burden of diabetes mellit us (DM) and improve the quality of life for all persons who have, or are at risk for DM. Evidence base research exist which supports the prevention or delay of type 2 diabetes through the use of medical nutrition therapy, weight management and physical activity.
